"Interpreting Catholic Liturgical Rites" | November 2014 Interpreting Workshop

"Interpreting Catholic Liturgical Rites" - With Fr. Shawn Carey | Saturday November 1st, 2014

Workshop Description:

Interpreting a Catholic Mass with the Rites of Sacraments such as Baptism, First Communion, Confirmation, Penance, Marriage, Ordination, and Funeral can be complex but with hands on and educational experience will make your interpreting work even more effective. During this workshop you will have an opportunity to develop your interpreting skills not only in a Catholic Mass but also in the Rites of Sacraments that are often integrated in the order of a Catholic Mass. Participants will gain a familiarity and a deeper understanding of the Catholic Liturgical Rites that will enable them to prepare better whenever they get an interpreting work at a Catholic church. Workshop topics include the basic Catholic ASL terminology and prayers, the Order of Mass with/without the Rites of Sacraments and understanding the Sacraments and its concepts. A panel of Deaf Catholic members will be present to share their expectations and experiences with interpreters in a Catholic setting whether that be a Mass or a Rite of a particular Sacrament or both. There will also be opportunities for hands on activities in each workshop topic such as practicing the ASL prayers and analyzing texts for Mass with/without the Rite of Sacraments from English to ASL. Participants will have an opportunity to observe Catholic Mass celebrated by a Deaf priest, Fr. Shawn Carey, and have the chance to see ASL translations and concepts for a Catholic liturgy produced by an extremely knowledgeable source. After Mass observation there will immediately be time to answer questions. Please note this workshop will be predominantly presented in ASL.
